Weight Rack
June 2023We had exercise equipment all over the shop floor, so I made this rack out of some scrap metal I had.
Metal was taken from bed frames, a garage door opener, electrical conduit, a baby gate, and some other unknown metal I found buried on our property. Luckily, I had some nice, thick 2” square tubing laying around to use for the main supports.
I wanted it to have as many shelves as possible, but allow enough space to comfortably access the equipment. I designed it to have 2 legs that would be bolted to the floor and the wall. I wanted the weight to lean against the wall for stability, so the shelves were attached slightly behind the legs.
First, I welded the 90 degree angle at the top of the legs and bolted them down. Then, I designed and install each shelf from the bottom up (heaviest weight on bottom). After the metal was cut, I clamped it in place and went through the motions of taking the weight in and out of the rack to make sure the position was correct. Then, I tacked the shelf on and welded it.
I didn’t know how many shelves I would be able to fit when I started. The rack ended up with 6 shelves, which is more than most commercial weight racks have.
